CHARGING & RANGE FAQ.

Do I need special equipment to charge my BMW electrified vehicle?

The BMW iX and i4 come equipped with a Flexible Fast Charger, which is capable of charging at 9.6 kW, and can be plugged into any Level 1 three-pronged home outlet (120V) or Level 2 charger (240V).

The optional BMW Wallbox is the ultimate in electric convenience. With its robust and weather-proof design, it can be installed in your garage or outdoors and delivers Level 2 charging at 9.6 kW charging speeds.

When charging at public charging stations, no additional equipment is required.

What is the difference between kW and kWh?

A kilowatt (kW) is a unit for measuring power. For electrified vehicles, it can refer to the power that electric motors are capable of outputting, or the output of products and stations used to charge a vehicle’s battery – with higher numbers equating to higher charging speeds.

A kilowatt-hour (kWh) is a unit for measuring energy. In the context of electrified vehicles, a kWh measures the battery’s energy capacity. This means that batteries with a higher kWh are capable of storing more energy, resulting in a higher range.

Can I initiate charging remotely?

When your vehicle is plugged in to a home charger, the My BMW App will allow you to remotely set your departure time, and your vehicle will charge accordingly.

What is “pre-conditioning” and why is it important?

Pre-conditioning is a function of electric vehicles that refers to warming up the vehicle’s battery and cabin while it’s plugged in and charging. Pre-conditioning can be activated remotely from the My BMW App, and will help to further optimize battery efficiency and range.

Does extreme cold weather affect range?

Much like any electric or fuel-powered vehicle, extreme cold weather can affect range. One of the main reasons range is affected by cold weather is due to overusing the heating system when the battery is still cold, which draws a lot of energy from your BMW’s high-voltage battery. To counteract this effect, it’s recommended that you pre-condition your BMW while it’s charging from the My BMW App to ensure its battery temperature is optimized before departure. Doing so will also help your cabin climate reach a comfortable temperature. For more information on this, you can watch the video linked below.

Does Canada have the charging infrastructure to accommodate electric vehicles?

There are over 6,000 public charging stations and over 12,000 charging ports across Canada, all of which can be easily located and navigated to via your BMW iDrive system, or from the My BMW App.

Do electric and plug-in hybrid BMWs charge while driving?

Both electric and plug-in hybrid BMWs can charge while driving, thanks to regenerative braking technology, which allows the vehicle to recoup part of its energy during deceleration.

What is the best time to charge an electric BMW?

Most electricity providers typically have “off-peak rates” overnight, meaning that charging your vehicle can be more cost-effective from 11 PM – 7 AM. Check with your utility company to find out more about their peak and off-peak hours.
